Harpy Extended Edition

You may have seen a video of me drawing this harpy on Proko sped up to a brief 20 minutes with some scripted-after-the-act voiceover. Well here’s the thing- I actually narrated my whole process in real time as I did that drawing- all 16 hours of it. Yeah. So, I finally got around to cutting out the silent parts and putting together this extended edition which runs over five hours of fully narrated drawing.
This is my most complete tutorial for showing the process of finishing a pencil drawing beginning to end and is a ride along as I go from the very first ghostly lines to the rendered finish. A couple important things this format does:
- Because it’s real-time it shows the pace and patience of my mark making, which is a very important part of drawing that is completely lost in sped up footage.
- Because I’m speaking as I draw, this has the kind of narration that is impossible to get when speaking over sped up footage- it’s real draftsmanship narration. Design decision making in the moment. You see me mess up, correct things, and mull things over.
